Palm Oil vs Palm Kernel Oil: Different Raw Material, Different Machines

Palm oil and palm kernel oil come from the same fruit but from different parts of it, and they need different machines. Buyers in West Africa sometimes ask us for one machine to do both. It does not exist. This page explains why and which equipment fits each.

Palm oil needs a full line

Fresh fruit bunches must be sterilized with steam within a day or two of harvest, stripped, digested and pressed while hot, and the oil clarified to remove water and fiber. That is a continuous wet process built around a screw press. A hydraulic press is not suited to it.

Palm kernel oil can start with one press

Palm kernels are a dry, stable raw material. After cracking and separation, the kernels are crushed and conditioned with heat before pressing. In our process sheet, palm kernel is hot pressed after a high-speed crusher and a steamer, with an oil content of about 42%. A hydraulic oil press suits small and medium batches; screw presses suit continuous bulk production.

Are palm oil and palm kernel oil the same?

No. Palm oil comes from the fruit flesh, palm kernel oil from the kernel inside the nut. They are processed differently and sold to different markets.
