Oil Mill Equipment: Screw Presses, Hydraulic Presses, Filters & Butter Mills

• Pressing all day, one operator — a screw press. It feeds continuously and does not need the cake wrapped by hand.
• Cold pressing for flavour or shelf appeal — a hydraulic press. Slower per hour, clearer oil, gentler on sesame, camellia and walnut.
• Very small or occasional batches — a manual jack press. No motor, no power supply, useful for samples and pomace.
• Selling bottled oil — add a filter. Unfiltered oil clouds and shortens shelf life, whichever press produced it.
• Selling paste as well as oil — add a nut butter mill. Same counter, same seed stock, second product line.

Capacity figures on any press assume clean, correctly dried seed. Damp or low-oil material runs slower on every machine in this range.

1. Clean and dry the seed

   Remove stones, husk and metal, then bring the seed to the right moisture. This single step decides more of your yield than the choice of press.

2. Roast, if the oil calls for it

   Sesame and peanut oil sold on flavour are roasted before pressing. Some screw presses in this range roast and press in one unit.

3. Press

   A screw press for continuous volume, a hydraulic press for cold-pressed batches. A feeder keeps the rate steady so the chamber holds pressure.

4. Settle, then filter

   Let the oil stand so heavy solids drop, then run it through a leaf, plate-and-frame or vacuum filter before bottling.

5. Grind the by-product

   Roasted seed can also go to a colloid mill for peanut or sesame butter, which sells from the same counter as the oil.
